Mark Sherman's CH701

The gas spring I used is from Aircraft Spruce the number is FE-11 for $18.70.

The only thing I would do different would be to put a longer/bigger attach point on the door.  The door is a little flimsy with the spring mounted that close to the top hinge point.  I will put a strap about half way up the door for closing it once inside the airplane.  If you grab the bottom of the door to close it, it seems to flex a lot and may cause some problems down the road.

I mounted the doors before I put the wings on and got the upper limit of the door close.  It would probably be better to wait until the wings are on.  After the wings were mounted the door came up and hit the fuel drain.  So I replaced the stock drains with flush mounts and put a little rubber bumper on the bottom of the wing at the main spar for the door to rest against in the open position.

I don't think I will be able to fly with the doors open, I will just have to take them off.

The building process has been a little slow as of late.  We bought a couple of new businesses and they are keeping me busy.  I have the engine mounted and I am wiring the engine gauges and controls. I am using the Rotax 912S and the FWF from Skyshops.  The engine was cheaper and the quality of the kit was better than Zeniths.

Offset mounting bracket on gas spring keeps the door closed by going over-center when door is closed

Another view. Also shows hard plumbing of fuel, static and pitot air

Door finished. Gas spring with door open.

Doors should just come up and touch the bottom of wing. Might have to install a little bumper
